Conference Overview
Adolescence…a time of exploration, experimentation and striving for independence. As providers who care for adolescents, we have unique opportunities to make a difference in their health and lives by being creative, flexible and open in the care we provide. The 10th annual Adolescent Health Care Conference will address key clinical and psychosocial issues affecting teens and will provide you with tools and skills to meet the needs of your adolescent patients and their families.
Designed for MDs, NPs, PAs, CNMs, RNs, psychologists and social workers from a variety of practice settings, this Conference is presented in collaboration with Seattle Children’s Hospital, Division of Adolescent Medicine and features leading experts in the field of adolescent care. Practical approaches to prevention, diagnosis and management of common and complex adolescent health problems will be addressed, as well as strategies for working with teens and their parents to modify risk-taking behavior.
Highlights of this Conference include:
- Three dynamic Pre-Conferences focusing on hot topics in adolescent care: Promoting Resiliency and Improving Communication Skills with Teens, Adolescent Obesity, and an IMPLANON® Training.
- A number of compelling issues you deal with daily, presented in a variety of teaching formals, including didactic sessions, faculty panels, concurrent sessions and interactive case study discussions for learning from the experts and your colleagues.

Pre-Conference A
Reaching Adolescents: Building on the Strengths of Youth
Kenneth R. Ginsburg, MD, MSEd, FAAP
Thursday, May 13 - All Day
Giving you the tools you need to work more effectively with kids and to strategize with parents to help their teens stay safe and healthy, this Pre-Conference received stellar reviews when presented in 2009. Comments such as, “Great strategies for working with kids … the love really comes through,” “inspiring...you make me want to do a better job,” and “engaging, dynamic and motivating … helped re-charge my enthusiasm for working with teens” attest to the fact that this is one session you don’t want to miss!
Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, from the Craig-Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, lectures widely to professionals and parents in an effort to assure that children are prepared for a safe passage through adolescence. The author of several excellent books on parenting teens, including the book, “A Parent’s Guide to Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Your Child Roots and Wings,” Dr. Ginsburg is dynamic and thought-provoking. He uses humor, real-life scenarios and poignant cases that will pull at your heart strings and motivate you to want to make a difference in the lives of the adolescents you see. Dr. Ginsburg’s concrete tools and effective approaches for interviewing and counseling teens and their parents will help you encourage behavior change when you see a teen headed in the wrong direction.
Come prepared to be challenged, to interact, and most of all to develop a plan for building on the strengths of youth to help them overcome risk and achieve their potential.
This Pre-Conference will enable you to:
- Create a zone of safety in your encounters with adolescents that clearly communicates you are trustworthy.
- Explore the concept of promoting resiliency.
- Motivate young people toward wiser decisions, helping them focus on what they are doing right to gain the confidence to move forward with safer behaviors.
- Facilitate adolescents’ own wise decision-making, recognizing that the typical model of adult intervention – lecturing – usually backfires.
- Implement a stress reduction plan with children and adolescents and equip them with a wide repertoire of positive behaviors.

Pre-Conference B
Adolescent Obesity Intensive: An Action Plan for Motivating Change
Thursday, May 13 - All Day
Join your colleagues and our three faculty experts to focus on making a difference for overweight and obese adolescents and their families. We all know the problem … obesity is rampant in teens, along with early onset of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. With each improvement in technology, teens become even less active, and families are often too busy to meal plan. Clinicians have difficulty approaching the subject with adolescent patients and their parents and with presenting strategies that are realistic, engaging, useful and result in positive changes.
Built around the concepts of motivational interviewing, this Pre-Conference will give you tools and strategies to improve your interactions about weight management with teens and their families. It will also provide you with a multitude of patient education handouts and resources which are age-specific, interactive, and practical, allowing you to tailor your interventions to the needs of the teen and family. As you learn and practice the skills you’ll gain in this Pre-Conference, your success in motivating families to make definitive changes resulting in weight loss and healthier lifestyle choices will inevitably improve.
This Pre-Conference will enable the motivated clinician to better:
- Describe motivational interviewing and its use in the arena of working with adolescents and their families on weight management.
- Develop skills in using motivational interviewing in interactions with teens and families, through the use of role playing and patient vignettes.
- Utilize the NICHQ assessment tool when medically evaluating the overweight adolescent.
- Enhance obesity management and intervention strategies for adolescents through case-based discussion.
- Promote health behaviors related to weight management by using tools, patient hand-outs and other resources.
- Examine reimbursement strategies which help to make weight management financially viable for your practice.
