Conference Overview
Highlights and Benefits
The dynamics of forensic mental health continue to necessitate significant continuing education for clinicians in the field. With violence continuing to be recognized at pandemic levels globally, forensic professionals, as well as survivors and perpetrators, benefit from best practices based on contemporary scientific knowledge. Congruent with the national mandates toward evidence based practice, it is imperative that research findings be translated into safe and effective clinical practice and conversely that forensic research be guided by questions from clinical practice.
In order to meet this educational challenge, Contemporary Forums is pleased to invite you to attend the third annual Forensic Trends: Psychiatric & Behavioral Issues Conference. This symposium will examine current advances in forensic research and theory with subsequent translation into assessment strategies and interventions. As always, the goal is to produce the best possible legal and therapeutic outcomes for those encountering the medicolegal system. Bring your questions and take part in thought-provoking discussions in an environment conducive to learning, exchanging ideas and networking with colleagues.
Highlights of the 2010 Conference include:
- A multidisciplinary faculty of experts who are thought leaders and active practitioners in the forensic arena.
- A full-day Pre-Conference focusing on Risk Assessment for Intimate Partner Violence, leading toward subsequentcertification in use of the Danger Assessment Instrument.
- 16 Concurrent Session topics offering in-depth content to meet a variety of unique educational needs and interests.
- Conference Luncheon with a presentation by Lee Goldberg, writer and producer, on How Fictional Detectives Solve Crimes.
- At your request! A Networking Lunch, providing the opportunity to build relationships with forensic professionals from across the country.
- Case study reviews, small group discussions and faculty panels integrated within the didactic content in order to bring the information to life.
- Opportunities to meet colleagues and faculty from a wide variety of backgrounds and geographic locations.

Risk Assessment for Intimate Partner Violence: Training to Utilize the Danger Assessment Instrument in Clinical and Community Settings
Nancy E. Glass, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN
(Certification Test accessible online after conference.)
What is the Danger Assessment?
The challenge for practitioners who encounter abused women is to identify those with the highest level of danger. To facilitate this process, the Danger Assessment (DA), developed by Dr. Jackie Campbell in 1986, continues to be used by law enforcement, health care professionals, and domestic violence advocates in multiple settings and geographical areas. The first part assesses the severity and frequency of battering. The second part is a weighted scoring system of risk factors associated with intimate partner homicide. The training will focus on the evidence that supports the use of the Danger Assessment, how to score the DA and interpret these scores, and recommendations for developing a safety plan in collaboration with the woman using the DA.
What are the benefits of Danger Assessment Certification?
After successfully completing the post-test for this live training, you will be certified to use the Danger Assessment Instrument. You’ll be able to download a certificate, the scoring system worksheet which includes the danger level interpretation, and a results page that you can copy and put in case files for documentation. The post-test, certificate and scoring system will be available for a fee of $25 at www.dangerassessment.com.
This Pre-Conference will enable you to:
- Identify abused women who are at the highest risk of danger for increased levels and frequency of intimate partner violence.
- Utilize the Danger Assessment Instrument in practice to improve objective documentation.
- Translate the Instrument findings into recommendations for a safety plan.
