Conference Overview
Though processes, guidelines and options evolve, the goal of psychiatric nursing remains unchanged – to provide evidence-based care that promotes healing in a safe and therapeutic environment. Accurate assessment and diagnosis, the “right” mix of therapy and medication and appropriate follow-up are all key components to best possible outcomes. How can we facilitate this process through the continuum of care, no matter what our practice setting?
We invite you to the 25th Annual Psychiatric Nursing Conferences, where we will investigate how to fit together all the pieces of the therapeutic puzzle and devise practical treatment plans. Bring your questions and challenging cases, and receive thought-provoking guidance in this interactive learning environment. Return to your practice setting armed with new tools and ideas, and re-energized to continue the work you know and love!
Highlights & Benefits of the 2010 Conferences include:
- Two exciting Philadelphia Pre-Conference options: “Psychopharmacologic Complexities in Prescriptive Practice”, or “Dialectical Behavior Therapy”.

Pre-Conference A
Safe Practice in Psychiatric Emergencies
Psychiatric emergencies occur in up to 20% of patients with psychiatric disorders admitted to hospitals and necessitate interventions ranging from verbal de-escalation to medication administration or physical restraints. The most severe psychiatric emergencies involve patients who present with significant alterations in mood, thoughts or behaviors. Many psychiatric emergencies include aggressive and violent behaviors that arise from psychosis associated with schizophrenia, substance intoxication or withdrawal, acute mania, and cognitive disturbances. Serious injuries to both patients and staff can occur. In these situations psychiatric nurses are challenged to quickly assess, diagnose, intervene and make appropriate dispositions to ensure staff and patient safety.
This Pre-Conference, will enable you to:
- Analyze major concepts of psychiatric emergency management and the importance of personal safety.
- State strategies that mitigate suicide risk.
- Specify pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of acute psychosis.
- Discuss the management of mood and anxiety-related emergencies.
- Describe the evaluation and treatment of substance-related disorders.
