Conference Overview

Though processes, guidelines and options evolve, the goal of psychiatric nursing remains unchanged – to provide evidence-based care that promotes healing in a safe and therapeutic environment. Accurate assessment and diagnosis, the “right” mix of therapy and medication and appropriate follow-up are all key components to best possible outcomes. How can we facilitate this process through the continuum of care, no matter what our practice setting?

We invite you to the 25th Annual Psychiatric Nursing Conferences, where we will investigate how to fit together all the pieces of the therapeutic puzzle and devise practical treatment plans. Bring your questions and challenging cases, and receive thought-provoking guidance in this interactive learning environment. Return to your practice setting armed with new tools and ideas, and re-energized to continue the work you know and love!

Highlights & Benefits of the 2010 Conferences include:

  • Two exciting Las Vegas Pre-Conference options: “Psychopharmacologic Complexities in Prescriptive Practice”, or “Dialectical Behavior Therapy”.
  • A chance to earn pharmacology credit for gaining or renewing prescriptive authority.
  • Case studies interwoven with didactic content in order to emphasize clinical applications of the material presented.
  • Main Conference presentations addressing both the global issues affecting psychiatric nursing as well as daily practice challenges.
  • 20 Concurrent Session choices, providing opportunity for discussion of topics vital to your individual needs and interests.
  • New perspectives gained through dynamic interaction with our expert faculty as well as your colleagues from across the country.

Pre-Conference A

Psychopharmacologic Complexities in Prescriptive Practice

Complexities abound in today’s mental health practice and no less so for prescriptive practice. This case-based Pre-Conference will focus on the challenges presented by real-life patients, where diagnoses are not always clear, making treatment decisions difficult. Experienced nurse clinicians will improve their understanding of the science of psychopharmacology as well as increase their capacity for the art of diagnosis and treatment planning.

This Pre-Conference will enable you to:

  • Apply a balanced approach of medication and therapy options to patients with anxiety.
  • Analyze risks related to antidepressant treatment choices in women.
  • Recognize the overlapping symptoms of mood disorders, personality structure, and psychological trauma, and identify appropriate integrated treatment approaches.
  • Implement strategies for simplifying and improving outcomes in individuals using multiple medications.

Pre-Conference B

Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Frontline Strategies for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder
Shireen L. Rizvi, PhD

Frontline clinical staff are often faced with challenging patients, some of whom are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an effective, evidence-based therapy program designed to treat individuals with BPD and other complex, chronic, difficult-to-treat disorders combining Axis I and Axis II diagnoses in a variety of treatment contexts. Although a comprehensive DBT program is often recommended for these patients, the resources are often not available and many clients will actually spend more time with frontline staff members than they do with their clinically licensed and trained therapists. Having a foundation in DBT principles and a wide array of concrete strategies to use with clients can help frontline staff maintain compassion, increase effectiveness, and reduce the likelihood of burnout.

This Pre-Conference will enable you to:

  • Identify how the theory, principles, and functions of comprehensive DBT treatment can be applied.
  • Define how your role relates to the work of DBT individual therapy and the targets developed in that treatment.
  • Describe how to use DBT’s validation principles and strategies.
  • Explain the use of mindfulness practices and teamwork principles to cultivate support and prevent staff burnout.
