The Expanded Donor Pool: Helping Patients and Families Make the Right Decision

ACPE #263-000-08-904-6.75LO4 hours

As the wait list for solid organ transplantation grows, the transplant community has expanded the pool of potential donors by redefining the conditions for standard criteria donors (SCD), utilizing older donors as well as those with uncertain social histories. With the expanded criteria donors (ECD) and donation after cardiac death (DCD), we have more donor options, but each with its own set of outcomes ramifications.

Ethical issues surround these expanded options as transplant professionals, candidates and their families struggle to grasp the implications of donor types. How do we ensure that candidates and their families understand the potential risks with expanded donor options at the time they are being offered a transplant opportunity? How does the expanded choice change the process of informed consent? And what ethical issues weave their way into the informed consent protocol? Join us for a day to consider the issues and examine practices to keep families and patients informed of options as they wait for an organ to become available.
